The Issa family-owned SuperClubs resort chain says it is entering Panama's tourism market with a 300-room Breezes resort near Playa Blanca.

The popular Jamaica-based all-inclusive chain signed a 10-year contract with developers Sunstar Hotel Development SA to build the hotel along the country's premier southern Pacific coast beaches, in the luxury coastal community of Bijao in the Cocle province.

Ground will be broken for the family-friendly hotel in 2007, with the resort, featuring both a spa and casino, slated to open in mid-2008.

"SuperClubs has been our preferred partner for this development since its very inception because of its success, proven networks and track record," a news release from the resort chain quotes Raul Jimenex, president of Sunstar Hotels and Development.

SuperClubs also said it would break ground in early 2007 for the 229-room Breezes Buzios Resort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which is scheduled to open in 2009.

Located on Rio's famed beach town - and favourite playground of French actress Bridget Bardot in the 1960s - Breezes Buzios will feature a spa, mini golf course, cycling paths, roller skating park, archery centre, bowling alley, and convention facilities. In addition to rooms and suites, the resort will also feature 110 villas.

"As our first Central American resort, Breezes in Panama figures prominently in our expansion strategy in Latin America," said SuperClubs executive chairman John Issa. "Panama and Brazil are our top growth priorities, and we are excited to introduce our turnkey operation to new and vibrant destinations."

These two additions mark SuperClubs' first foray into Panama and its third property in Latin America, increasing the chain's Breezes portfolio to eight resorts in six countries.

SuperClubs first entered the South American market in September 2000 with the opening of the company's first resort outside the Caribbean: Breezes Costa Do Sauipe in Bahia, Brazil. In March 2001, a master franchise agreement was signed with Sonesta International Hotels Corporation, and SuperClubs currently manages two Sonesta hotels in Brazil - Sonesta Sao Paulo (since December 2004) and Sonesta Brasilia, which opened just last month. Additional Breezes properties are located in Jamaica, Nassau in the Bahamas, Curacao and the Dominican Republic.

Developers of the two hotels to be run by Super-Clubs in Panama and Brazil are investing US$100 million in the properties, according to Jennifer Friedel of Spring O'Brien and Company, publicists for the Jamaican resort chain.

The two propoerties, to be marketed under the Breezes brand, will bring another 630 rooms under SuperClubs' management, boosting the total count to 5,130 rooms sold under its four brands - the other three being Grand Lido, Starfish and Hedonism.

Issa has a 10-year contract with Sunstar Hotels Development SA to operate a 300-room luxury Breezes resort, under development in Bijao Coclé, Panama, beginning early next year.

SuperClubs will also manage a 330 room hotel called the Breezes Buzios Resort being developed in Rio de Janiero Brazil starting around the same period.

"Panama and Brazil are our top growth priorities, and we are excited to introduce our turnkey operation to new and vibrant destinations," said executive chairman John Issa, quoted in a release on SuperClubs' expansions in Latin America.

Both resorts were announced to carry luxurious top end features including spas, casino, a golf course, a bowling alley, cycling paths, roller skating park, and archery centre which could attract high development costs.

Issa has said he has no equity stake in the properties.

At the development costs quoted by Spring O'Brien, the unit cost to build would be just under US$159,000 per room.

"By being creative in planning and design one is able to eliminate waste," said Issa, whose company provides technical and design services to the developers.

"It is also important not to over build the central facilities beyond what is needed for the hotels," he said.

TRAVEL+LEISURE Reports: Life's a Beach

From July 2005

Proof that the world is just one big spin-off of South Beach: Ocean Drive's Nikki Beachtm  (www.nikkibeach.com), a restaurant-club catering to the (expensively) underdressed and oversexed, is replicating its formula around the globe. With Nikki boîtes already ensconced on St. Bart's and Sardinia, and four more openings since 2004—in Cabo San Lucas, Cannes, Atlantic City, and Buzios, Brazil—the club's signature white umbrellas may soon cover the planet. At each outpost, you'll find bamboo lounges around a torchlit pool, an Atkins-friendly menu of sashimi and carpaccio, and a hard-partying clientele for whom Cristal is meant to be sprayed on one's companions, not just imbibed.

South Beach Miami - Miami, Florida

  Nikki People

South Beach, Miami, offers all the partying you could possibly want - and then some. Coming in at number two on the World's Best Party Beaches - South Beach is for beautiful people (or those who aspire).
BEST TIP IN TOWN: Arrive before 11 PM to avoid a cover charge. Many clubs don't charge before 11 or midnight - just ask by calling ahead. All clubs are listed in the phone book. Calling early will avoid finding out that the club you planned hasn't turned into a food court. And make sure your concierge puts you on the guest list. That could save some bucks by the end of the evening.

The beautiful people come here to play - well, okay - to be seen, by scouts from Miami's thriving modeling community. So, make sure you take time during the day to stroll up Ocean Drive, the main strip in South Beach, where hotels, restaurants, and the "chic"est mansions lie. You'll find plenty to do.

And, since this is the "beach", the does is to visit the awesome strip of powdery sand along the Atlantic. There's great food here during the day, and then after sundown, return for fun at the beachside beds on stilts at Nikki Beach. The most chic place in town.

Spain: Sparkling Costa Del Sol
By Karla Erovick

The Costa del Sol is the most amazing 150 kilometers of beautiful beaches, sparkling azure seas and sun drenched sand. It is the perfect destination for the Diva who is in search of the perfect climate and beach vacation.

Located in the Andalucia region of Spain, it combines white-washed towns with Moorish architecture. Although I know few people who have experienced the charms of the Costa del Sol, over 23 million people visited the region last year, so it’s hardly a secret. During my stay, I visited three distinct Andalucian towns, all with their own attraction and charm.

MARBELLA

Marbella is the favored destination of the beautiful people, jet-setters and celebrities the world over. Marbella’s beautiful 26 mile beach, bayside resorts and nightclubs have it all. Stay at Puente Romano for ultimate pampering, located in a lush garden setting in Moorish style villas. The resort cuts a swath to the beach as it winds through tropical gardens and landscaping. The resort’s private beach, restaurants, and nightclubs are some of the finest with guaranteed access for guests.

If you choose a relaxing vacation, there is a spa and workout facility with your choice of three distinct lushly landscaped outdoor pools. The beach promenade stretches for miles along a gorgeous coastline and makes for wonderful strolls at dusk. The inviting private beach offers beach chairs, umbrellas and round platforms. It will be a tough choice as to where to enjoy sunbathing as the three pools are amidst tropical foliage and each are idyllic. You could easily mistake Marbella for Santa Barbara; both have mountains framing a beautiful palm-lined, sun-drenched coast and a near-perfect climate.

The beach vendors have tents in which they sell their wares catering to beach-goers, selling cover-ups, shisha pipes (which they also rent) and various crafts and art pieces, all to make your stay more comfortable. You can also rent kayaks or jet skis. Marbella is nearly an hour’s drive from the Malaga Airport. There are numerous taxi’s available for hire. Puerto Banus is home to some of the world’s largest yachts, shopping, the famed Nikki Beach Club and stylish restaurants and clubs, and only a quick ten minute taxi ride from Puente Romano.
